More to come...

Mia and Oscar

June 18, 2011

So many Zumba events! On Saturday, Mia and Oscar held a Master Class in Richmond. That was a lot of fun, too, and this time, I got to dance! What was even nicer was I finally convinced my sister, Boobie, to join me at an event (second from left, top). She enjoyed it! Hopefully, I have created another Zumba enthusiast.

Mia and Oscar

Too many pictures to post here, see the rest on my Phanfare site.

I LOVE ZUMBA! WEPA!

Mia, Raquel and Bianca

June 17, 2011

Mia, Raquel and Bianca

This Master Class took place on the 17th. It was a lot of fun! Unfortunately, I did not get to dance much because I ended up being the impromptu DJ. LOL! I loaded more pictures on my Phanfare site, but I only took iPhone pictures in the dark so they are very good. Yeah, I'm the DJ! Too bad I didn't even know where the volume was.

DJ

At one point, a bunch of people handed me their devices so they could do a routine. It was a little crazy but it all worked out!

DJ

The special guest from Miami was Bianca Ayala, hosted by our locals, Mia Said and Raquel Call. I called her my long lost Peruvian sister, even though she's probably younger than my kids!

Levity Class

June 6, 2011

Finally, I taught my first class at Levity Fitness on Monday, June 6! I ended up with 5 classes during the week. Monday, Wednesday, Friday at 10:00 and Monday, Wednesday at 6:30. This works out perfectly as I can still have Tuesday and Thursday to, you know, lounge by the pool, go to the museums and so forth. Most importantly, I have my Friday nights free to hang out with friends!

I wasn't sure how it was all going to work out. I was a little apprehensive as I was unnerved by some comments I received the Friday before I was to begin teaching. It made me doubt why I was doing this at all. Was I going to be a complete failure? In the end, I was very pleased with how the classes went. This is a picture of the Monday morning class.

Levity 1

And this is the evening class.

Levity 2

Happy, sweaty Zumba faces! Love it! All of my students were first time Zumbaers. THEY were a little apprehensive at first. They were a little afraid they wouldn't get the routines, etc. Going into the 3rd week, they are feeling confident and are moving closer to the front of the room. All in all, I am very pleased with their progress AND mine. I am a lot more relaxed than I was 3 weeks ago!

Guicho and Alex

June 4, 2011

On Saturday, June 4, Guicho and Alex had their first class at the Pacheco Rec Center. It was so much fun. Several of us headed over there after Mia's class at the Ministry. I haven't had a chance to go back since the first class, but I'm looking forward to it again. $10 drop in! See their flyer. I have a billion more pictures and I will upload them to my Phanfare site. Email me for the password.

Guicho Alex First Class

They also invited me (and others) to do a routine. Here's the one I did. Zumba Samba.

And for your viewing pleasure, here are a bunch more routines I recorded that day:

Zumba Samba, etc.

June 1, 2011

I videotaped me doing this Zumba Samba routine so I could critique me but my eyes wouldn't leave my giggly belly, or the giggly arms, or the awkward smile. Real 10 pounds or camera 10 pounds? Dangit, I think it's real. And that awkward smile...I swear, I'm going to get one of those flipper things the beauty contestants wear in Toddlers and Tiaras. Big sigh...BRB, going to go do 500 sit ups.

In other Zumba news, the Wally event that I didn't go to because it was my F-I-L's 70th birthday dinner, was a blast. He will be back in September and I'm definitely going to go. All said he was a humble person and a fabulous dancer. See you in September, Wally!

Also made this flyer for un upcoming event in Concord.

Bianca, Mia, Raquel

I made these flyers for my Zumba friend, Guicho, for the classes he's going to start for himself and with my other Zumba friend, Alex.

First Time Teaching

May 23 , 2011

It was kind of short notice but Pam from Sanctuary Ministry asked me if I would sub for Alex on Thursday, May 19. This was to be the first official (not practice) time I would lead an hour long class, on my own and get paid. Hey, wait! I didn't get paid! LOL! Guess I should talk to Alex or Pam about that. How do subs get paid anyway? Not that it would really matter too much. I was grateful for the practice time as my classes begin on Monday, June 6.

I was apprehensive because of Alex' reputation. He is known for his immense energy and his beautiful, rhythmic dancing. I had some big shoes to fill! I didn't panic too much, though, because I figured I'd know many of the folks there from Mia's class. NOT. It was a whole different group of people except for one or two.

I then thought I would greet the folks as they walked in but Pam said that was not a good idea. It made sense I totally understand. Most people go to a class because they enjoy the instructor. Pam was afraid that if we didn't bait and switch them, they would leave before even giving me a chance.

So, at 6:00 p.m., I hopped up on stage and said, "Hi! I'm not Alex. You can tell because I don't have all the tattoos." Chuckles. And off I went. I hadn't practiced leading a class facing everyone, and I'm really bad at knowing my right from my left, so I faced away from the class for the majority of the time.

It seemed to be going well. The folks were responsive, seemed to like the music and my cheer leaders were whooping it up. Thanks Pam and Dina!

I video taped me so that I would be able to critique myself later. Unfortunately I never had someone stand up there so I could aim the thing properly. The whole hour looks like this.

I Love Salsa.

Begin cool down to Las Piernas de Malena.

Oh well, it's retarded but I can still kind of critique me. I could tell that I was starting to look pooped at the end. I guess I'll have to learn to pace myself. I also need to remember to hold in my gut.

When class was over, I got a very positive response from everyone. Best compliment I could ever imagine though, was from a woman who came up to me and said, "You are REALLY good! Are you Alex' sister?" LOL! I have children older than Alex! To me, that was the highest compliment possible so I was stoked! Well, being compared to Mia would have been nice, too. The whole evening was exhilarating! Pam and Dina said it was really good, too. Pam also said that she would have definitely heard about it if people didn't like me. Now let's wait and see if they complain to Alex!

I then left and went to catch the second half of Mia's class over at UFC. Mid way through, I had to stop and eat a Power Bar. I guess this tells me I'm probably too old to do back to back classes.

Too much fun! Can't wait to do it again!

Brazilian BBQ

May 14 , 2011

Raquel Call invited all the California ZINs to a BBQ, Brazilian style. When she got more than 40 families who RSVP 'd YES, she moved it to Heather Farms. It was a fun day with Zumba family, new and old! There was lots of picture taking.

Brazilian BBQ

Matt and Brian manned the grill with Raquel.

Brazilian BBQ

Dancing broke out the entire time. People kept asking if they could join us!

Brazilian BBQ

It was lots of fun!

Brazilian BBQ

And more fun!

Brazilian BBQ

Thank you, Raquel, for putting this event together. Looking forward to more fun with our Zumba family!

I have tons more pictures on Flickr if you're interested!

Zix Things

May 7 , 2011

1. I purchased the URL Zumba Con Sabor! For the record, I was not intoxicated. Haven't done anything with it yet. The URL was available and if this Zumba thing takes off, I probably don't want to direct people to Nerd in the Burb or Rosy Straka Dot Com.

2. More with My UFC Zumba buddies! An Amelia sandwich...LOL! Amelia, me, Pilar, Tammy, Girl Who's Name I Forget, Lupita, Adrienne, Amelia (Mia).

Inflated

May 7 , 2011

It was a little disappointing that the initial classes didn't start as scheduled on May 2 but Ilima has got the new session scheduled and it will begin on June 6. The enrollment at Levity Fitness may not be live at the moment, but should be shortly. I decided to advertise my classes as well and created this flyer. Pass it on to anyone you know who might want to take a class in Clayton.

Deflated

May 2 , 2011

My classes at Levity Fitness are not starting after all. All classes for this session (May 2 through June 11) have been canceled due to low enrollment. I'm a lot more disappointed than I thought I would be. Plus feeling a little foolish for having spent $1,500 in licenses, certifications, clothing, etc., for a job I'm not getting paid for.

Big sigh.

I'm a jumble of emotions. Yelling at Nic for being home sick. I gotta go get my fix of my UFC Zumba girls and get rid of these grumps.

UFC Girls

Yeah, a Mia Zumba with my girls is sure to lift my spirits!

Busy

April 26, 2011

It's been a crazy week. I start my new Zumba job next Monday. Can you believe it's already here?!!!! Ilima, of Levity Fitness, is selling sessions to the class. Unfortunately, there are no drop in sessions at this time. It's sort of set up like the City of Concord Recreation is set up. You buy specific classes within a session or date range.

Anyway, I've been busy meeting the team, filling out my employment application. That was wild. Business references? I haven't worked since 1997! Anyway, I dug up some of my old IBM buddies and of course, Mia. I've also been holding practice sessions at my house. A couple of my girlfriends have never taken a Zumba class. They were afraid but after coming to my practice sessions, they signed up for classes! YAY!

There are also many Zumbathon's and Master Classes going on. You can check Raquel and Mia's web sites for more information.

I created the flyer for the Sanctuary Ministries for their regular classes:

Sanctuary Postcard

And this one for the upcoming Master Class/Zumbathon at the Ministry:

Sanctuary Zumbathon

Duh, Rosy, create a flyer for your own self! OK, that'll be up next. Remember, I start classes at Levity Fitness on Monday! WOOHOOO!

52

April 21, 2011

I had a staff meeting today. The first I've had since sometime in 1997. W-9, Contractor Agreements. Wow, stuff I haven't heard in quite some time! Levity Fitness is almost ready to open! There will be an Open House on May 1 from 1 to 4. Pretty convenient as the Clayton Art and Wine Festival will be in full effect.

On another note, I met with the other Zumba instructor to compare notes on how we will run our classes and so forth. The youngin' will be teaching a Zumba Gold (beginner) class and I'm teaching the Basic Zumba class. She said she has been practicing on her family including her mother. She said, "It was hard for my mom. You know, she's 52 and has a bad knee. I hope it's not that hard for all the older people."

I wonder how old she thinks I am? At that point, I didn't have the heart to tell her I was 52. Tee-hee-hee.

Here's another photo of the Zumba Gold certification class. Eliza had it taken and then sent it to everyone. Again, great class!

Goldified

April 17, 2011

After agreeing to teach 10 Zumba classes a week starting in May, I decided I better have a backup plan in case these old, arthritic bones couldn't hang. I took the Zumba Gold Certification Class on Sunday.

Goldified

It was a far different experience than the Zumba Basic training. Here, we had a cozy 60is people. Not the 300 or so at Beto's Basic 1 in San Francisco in March.

Goldified

Eliza Stone, who Beto calls Jurassic because she's his oldest ZES (34!) was a doll. Her class was quite enjoyable. Everyone rotated during the master class portion and she called several people up to dance with her, including me!

Goldified

We had several good and quite relaxed question answer periods.

Goldified

And here I am all "Goldified" with Eliza Stone!

Goldified

My certificate.

Foothill Fundraiser

April 16, 2011

Several instructors, new and seasoned, donated our time to help Foothill Elementary in Pittsburg raise funds for one of their programs (flyer below). It was a win win all around. The school raised funds, new instructors got a chance to 'perform live', seasoned instructors mentored and all had fun!

Here I am leading one of the two routines I did, with Bryan, RaQuel, Wicho and Roberta as backup.

I love this picture. It makes me look toned. Dang 52 year old!

Intervention

April 18, 2011

So when is it too much? I got this lovely Zumba t-shirt.

And a lovely Zumba jacket.

Intervention

Zumba pants, of course.

Intervention

Put it all together.

Intervention

Oh, yes. The Zumba boob holder.

Intervention

Maybe it's the Zumba shoes that will cause the intervention? I have yet to see Zumba thongs. For not the feet.

Intervention

Eh. I fit right in! Zumba practice with the gang on April 15, 2011!

Levity

April 10, 2011

Levity Longevity Fitness Studio has gone live on-line! Grand Opening is on Monday, May 2, 2011. I will be holding two Zumba classes that day. You can see my schedule there, Longevity Fitness dot com or at Zumba dot com. I'm getting really excited! WOOOOHOOOO! (Ugh, Vicki Galverson.)

Levity

Also, don't forget to come out for a fundraiser for Foothill Elementary in Pittsburg. Donation is $5. Several new instructors and a few seasoned instructors are donating their time to help raise funds for Foothill and Willow Cove's Dual Immersion Annual Excursion. That's this Saturday, April 16 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Foothill Elementary, 1200 Jensen Drive, Pittsburg. Hope to see your there! Flyer below.

Tumble

April 8, 2011

Once upon a time, in a land far, far away (OK, it was Berkeley, more like a land far out), a rider on a BART train did this during commute hours. She got on the very crowded, morning train to The City. There was already standing room only so she set her brief case and bags down. She was wearing what most people wore back in the dark ages in the business community, a suit (skirt), pantyhose and sneakers. She would change from the sneakers into pumps once she got to her desk.

She squatted down to her brief case to adjust something when suddenly, the train went into motion. The jerk sent her into a complete, forward tumble. You know, the kind you did on the grass when you were a kid? Over and over? Undies squished in the pantyhose displayed momentarily and all.

This, of course, sent all the passengers who had seen it, into a fit of giggles.

One gentleman, dead pan, said, "It's a good thing you got that out of the way first thing." More giggles.

I know, it takes me forever to get to the point.

The point is, last night at UFC, Mia invited me to do a routine and I totally flubbed it. Totally. A routine I have done successfully several times at 24. It was embarrassing. I may not go through with this Zumba Instructor thing after all.

This morning I was leery of doing a routine if I was invited to do so. I was trying to lay low. But, Sheyla invited me to do a routine and -- I did and I nailed it! Well, in my mind I nailed it.

So I'm back in the saddle. It made me think of the BART story because hopefully, I'll get all of my flubbing of routines out of the way early!

By the way, the BART rider was not me. Seriously. It wasn't. I wasn't even there. My sister saw it. Ask her!
