Hanging up the Zumba Teaching Shoes

December 28, 2011

Yes, my friends, I'm hanging up those teaching shoes.

Remember a year ago, I was so excited to have made the decision to get licensed and teach Zumba? I was going to introduce Zumba to Clayton and they would come in droves! They were going to feel the music and the joy and lose 35 pounds just as I did!

But they didn't come. In fact, I pretty much drove them away in droves. Remember my obituary on my classes at Levity (click here for post)? Then I thought, well it's just Clayton and I gave it a try at a couple of places in Concord. Again, drove them away.

What was I thinking? Who the heck was going to want a 53 year old wrinkly, Zumba teacher? I should have taken the first hint when I did my first class at Sanctuary. Remember when I announced I was taking over for Alex and one woman said she wasn't coming back (click here for post)?

Now, everyone is pretty much completely gone, especially since Alex added a class at the same time for the same price. Nail in the coffin at my Sanctuary class. Well, who can blame them. They're young and hot and always strip off their shirts at the screaming delight of their participants. Oh, you want to go there, too? Well, if you're not already there, just check Zumba Dot Com for Instructor, Alex Higueros. This Thursday will be my last class at Sanctuary unless I can get a sub. I can't take any more rejection. If they keep it, it will be a Zumba Toning Class beginning in January.

Reflecting back on my short lived Zumba career, I should have seen the signs. Have you ever watched American Idol and you think, "Does that person actually think he can sing?" I guess maybe I had my blinders on when it came to my teaching/dancing ability. In my defense, I did tell Mia, Alda and Alex that they were required to tell me if I sucked. I guess they were too kind to or just never saw enough of my routines.

Then there was the time when 45 new people came to my classes at CVDA but only 3 kept coming.

Then there was the times I helped out on Master Classes but was never invited to be one of the guest dancers.

Then there were the classes that I go to where the instructor lets other instructors do routines but not me.

Then there was the time the instructor did let me do a routine and someone posted on his facebook wall to not let 'those ladies' teach.

Yeah, I should have taken all the hints that I sucked long ago. Oh well, it's probably going to be way easier to do the taxes without my piddly income. I actually don't even think there was an income. I have to update my spreadsheet but at last count, my investments in the licensing classes, music, clothing, etc., still exceeded any income I made.

C'est la vie. I'm sad but...tomorrow is another day.

I had grand plans of going to Miguel's awesome Zumba class on Thanksgiving morning but apparently, the Sushi I ate on Wednesday on top of the cold I had, just wouldn't let me. I muddled through Thanksgiving at my sister-in-law's house yesterday and felt much better this morning so I went to Mia's special holiday Zumba at 24 Hour Fitness in San Ramon. It was a lot of fun and huge! So huge they held it on the basketball court. Lots of Zumbini's from Antioch and Concord classes were there!

Instructors in the house danced many of the routines with Mia.

Battle on! Mia on one side, Bryan on the other.

October Updates

October 31 , 2011

A whole month without talking Zumba! Can you believe it? Actually, it's because I've been so busy Zumba'ing, haven't had time to blog!

First, here's my updated Zumba class Schedule Flyer or you can visit my Schedule page on Zumba Con Sabor Dot Com or my Zumba Profile on Zumba Dot Com. No classes at Levity for now but more classes at Clayton Valley Dance Academy.

Also, we had a couple of Master Classes. First, Mia and Miguel hosted Priscila Sartori at Foothill Elementary in Pittsburg. She's a delightful and a fabulous dancer. The turnout wasn't as good as we would have liked. Unfortunately, I think the month was saturated with Master Classes and frankly, most people just can't afford to go to more than a couple of Master Classes a year. She was a great sport, though!

Here are Mia, Priscila and Miguel.

Ballet at Clayton Valley Dance Academy

Oh, wait...wrong class. This is my ballet class at Clayton Valley Dance Academy. I take a little break from Zumba once a week and do this. I'm all klutz since I only started taking ballet a couple of months ago, but it's still fun!

And finally, the event we've had in the works since August - Celebration! It was a huge success! Mia was surprised and happy at all the planning we did, we had a great turn out and loads of fun! This how it went down. I can now share the Secret Planning Page. Everything went pretty much as planned, but people, next time, REALLY, send me your songs so I can enjoy, too, and not have to spend time changing between 52 iPods, OK?

But really, it was fabulous! Thank you to everyone who donated food, time and to all of our guest instructors! I couldn't have done it without you!

Celebration

I love how Mia is so happy watching all the instructors doing tribute dances for her.

Celebration

She's having so much fun! Mia's in the hat.

Afterwards, we went to La Pinata. Here are Tammy, me and Adrienne.

I also put together a little Tribute Video. Here it is:

And last, since it's Halloween, I'll leave you with this. Natalie and me. We went into Safeway and Starbucks like this. We also drove home from High School like this. Other drivers were cracking up.

October Events

October 1 , 2011

How about that? No Zumba pictures to post. Well, it is only the 1st after all. I do have a couple of upcoming events to share. Also listed in my Events Page on Zumba Con Sabor Dot Com. You know, when I purchased that URL, it never occurred to me people wouldn't know what it meant. LOL! Doesn't EVERYONE speak Spanish? Literally translated, it means Zumba With Flavor. The word sabor or flavor is associated with dance in Latin countries meaning your dance has ...um... style, sexy, sassy. Make sense?

In Master Class news, Mia and Miguel have the pleasure of hosting Priscila Sartori on October 21st. Should be a blast! You should come! $25 for 2 hours of Zumba fun!

Priscila Sartori Zumba Flyer

This is a special FREE event to celebrate several milestones at Sanctuary Ministries. It's the five year anniversary of Zumba being offered there, it's Mia's birthday and it's a Halloween Party! I can say that here because this is an "un politically correct" free zone. By the way, I created these flyers (not the Pink).

There are many Zumba events happening in the Bay. Check this page on Facebook for Master Classes in the Bay Area:

Raquel Call has several events going, too. Check her website, http://www.brazilzumba.com.

And last, Zumba and Susan G. Komen are working together to raise money for the fight against Breast Cancer. Check the Party in Pink section at Zumba Dot Com for a Pink Party near you!
