January 2021

That is correct. Not my BFF. My FBF. My First Best Friend. Let me start at the beginning. On January 4, the land line rang 4 times with the same name. Kerry D. Which by the way, alerted us that our Voice mail wasn't working or rather, that my Little Honey Bunch changed our plan and it didn't include Voice mail. So we got ... an answering machine! I can't believe they still make them and they work. Cheaper than VM. It reminds me of Sex and the City which I never watched when it came out, but binge watched all 6 seasons and 2 movies last month.

nswering Machine

ANYWAY...after the four calls, I noticed the same person started following my Zumba Instagram. Then, I got a message on my cell from this person. She left a message which asked if I was the 'Rosa' who used to live on Montana Street in San Francisco and went to St. Michael's. I called back (What!? me making a voice call?) and left a voice mail. "Yes, I lived on Montana and went to St. Michael's and I'm 62, if that helps to know who you are looking for."

My cell rang on my way to Safeway and it was her. I answered. She was so happy that she had found her First Best Friend from the 1st and 2nd Grade at St. Michael's. She said we played all the time. That she would grab my braids like reigns and we'd play 'horsey'. She said her sister, Bernadette, was my sister Celia's best friend.

And I couldn't remember any of that! There were two Montana Street houses. The only thing I remember about the first one was taking a picture on the sidewalk in front of my dad's new (to him) '57 Chevy. The only thing I remember about the second Montana Street house was being constipated, washing dishes standing on a chair and Baby (Jose) was the baby and my mom was pregnant. Maria de Guadalupe would be stillborn. I also remember Pookie and Marie, sisters who lived on the corner. But only their names and the front of their house. I don't remember playing.

I texted my sister, Eme (Celia), and asked her if she remembered a Kerry and Bernadette from Montana Street. She was like, "OH MY GOD! YES! They lived at 2XX Montana and we lived at 2XX. We played with them every day. We used to do concerts on our porch and sing 'Stop, in the name of love' and a bunch of other stuff. They had a mentally disabled brother, Michael, and two younger sisters, Michelle and Sabrina." Man, I really did lose a lot of brain cells during the wild '80s, didn't I?

Then I did remember their last name was Reed. She sent me her St. Michael's picture and I DID remember that cute little face! Kerry and Rosa (just like the St. Joseph's people called me, too!).

Kerry and Rosy

Kerry told me the reason she decided to look for me was because she found a letter my sister had written to her sister in 1968, ten days after Little (Manuel) was born.

Letter to Bernadette

Is this wild or what?! We've been texting and e-mailing, catching each other up on our families and lives. She sent this picture of her brother and sisters. Michael, Michelle, Kerry and Bernadette (Sabrina not shown). I definitely remember Bernadette, too. Sadly, she passed in 2012.

Reed Siblings

We are looking forward to meeting in person when Covid has calmed a bit. I feel a real connection with her. In fact, we've been living parallel lives!

She went to St. Michael's through the 8th grade. I went to St. Joseph's through the 8th grade. She went to Presentation SF for the 9th grade. I went to Presentation Berkeley for the 9th grade. We both went to other schools for the rest of high school.

We've both lost siblings and parents. She married a little white boy. I married a little white boy. She moved from the City to a house in the burbs with a pool. I moved from the other City (Oakland) to a house in the burbs with a pool. Her brother lives with her and her husband. My 25 year old lives with me and my Little Honey Bunch.

The husbands are both into motorcycles. We both pulled trailers with motorbikes. They tent camped and tent-trailer camped just like us. Then they had a Class C motor home and a boat, just like us! (Is this getting into Twilight Zone territory yet? NEVER! I love it!) They got rid of the boat for lack of interest as did we. They are currently in a Class A motor home which as many of you know, is the next thing on my Little Honey Bunch's list.

I can't wait to meet my FBF all over again! (In my photo I was paying homage to the delightful poet laureate, Amanda Gorman.) P.S. I think I'll wear my hair in braids when we meet again.
